Alright all you goal setters, let’s talk! We started a brand new year full of hope, excitement, and the belief that we can! We sprinted through January like an over eager marathoner and now it’s February 1st and you’re probably in one of three groups: Those who are crushing their goals, those who are maintaining, and those who have dropped out of the race. I get it! We have great intentions but things happen and life doesn’t always go according to plan.
But guess what? The start of a new month is a fantastic time to either start over or reassess and keep going. Just because January was a flop doesn’t mean 2017 has to be. Here are a few tips to make the first day of the month a great one!
- Day one is the chance to start new! Maybe January didn’t go so well and you need to get up, brush yourself off, and start again. That’s OK! Take a few minutes to know why January didn’t work so that you can be more effective at making your goals happen in February. You wouldn’t give up a marathon at mile one, would you? I hope not! Give yourself grace, don’t give up, and get back in the game!
- Take time to assess. At the end of the month, take a few minutes and see where you are. What worked? Do more of that! What didn’t work? Try a new approach! Remember – it’s OK to adjust your goals as needed. If you didn’t get everything accomplished in January like you thought you would, decide if they need to carry over to February or be scratched off the list altogether. If you’re overwhelmed, simplify. If you’re trying something that’s not working, stop doing it! Use the first day of the month as a chance for fresh eyes, renewed energy, and continuing the forward momentum.
- If you crushed your goals in January, write down a few reasons why it worked so well. As you approach a new month, decide what you can effectively accomplish and go after that. Don’t get too cocky and triple your goal list. Keep setting yourself up for success and remember the year is like a marathon. Take it one month at a time.
- Write it down! If you haven’t already, take five minutes and write down what you want to get done this month. Look at it and make sure it looks doable. Sure, you might push yourself but remember – simplified goals with very clear end results help set you up for success instead of failure! But I can’t stress enough the importance of writing it down and then creating your action plan for getting it done. Break down your monthly goals into weekly goals and block off time in your calendar for when you will put in the work. If you don’t make that time a priority it will never get done!
So let’s all close our eyes, take a deep breath, and tell February to be ready because we are putting in the work to make things happen! If you have any questions about crushing goals, feel free to contact me using the contact tab above. Let’s do this!
